Growing up in a large Muslim community, I always felt like I had many mothers. My curiosity with the Bay Area’s multi-ethnic Muslim community led me to the "Bay Area Muslim Study" researched by Farid Senzai and Hatem Bazian. I was compelled to understand the narrative behind this research, thinking about the journey of&nbsp;of mothers who shifted to the Bay Area and built a foundation for this ever-growing Muslim community. I reached out to the daughters of these Muslim women in leadership and orchestrated interviews focusing on the concept of motherhood. This publication is a compilation of those interviews complemented with excerpts from the "Bay Area Muslim Study." Process &amp; Design Thinking: In the interview spreads, each mother-daughter duo has a coordinating color that represents their identity through the use of their motherland’s national flower. The images were provided to me, which include pictures of objects that represent and remind the mothers of their motherland. The mothers' beautiful hands are displayed in the opening spread of each interview to symbolize their act of "building." Each interview ends with a handwritten note from the mother responding to the question, “What does it mean to be...” in accordance to their identity.To contrast the interviews, excerpts from "The Bay Area Muslim Study" include a heavy use of the color blue to represent the colors of the beloved San Francisco Bay. The divide of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh stems from the 1947 Partition which is classified as one of the largest human migrations in the world. All under one night sky, they follow the Moon’s song to find solace for their people. Process + Design Thinking:&nbsp; My design choices focus on the unification between the three ethnic groups. For example, the words “Chaand” and “Gaana” are the shared words of “Moon” and “Song” between the three languages of Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali. The cover is meant to emphasize or evoke the feeling of a partition between languages, which is why if you’re an English speaker your first instinct is to view it vertically. As for colors, the design decision behind the blue represents the moon and the three shades of green are in accordance to the green in each country’s flags. The shared appreciation of the color green between the three country’s emphasizes the union between them. Illustrator + Indesign + Photoshop June 2023&nbsp; We Wrote Obituaries While Praising Our God was my capestone for the Design Media Arts program at the University of California Los Angeles. A book installation that holds a collection of obituaries of attack victims from Islamophobic incidents. The events are narrated through fragments of a short-story written by my dear friend, Shania Jafri. Jannat-al-Baqi, translated as “The Garden of Trees” is the driving force of symbolism within this piece. As one of the largest graveyards in Medina, the neglect of its care amongst the Muslim Ummah speaks towards the carelessness and neglect that lies at the foundation of our humanity. In reference to Surah Al-Ma’idah, Verse 110 (in the Holy Quran) individual martyrs are represented as the birds of their land to symbolize life. Installation: For the installation, the dynamic nature of the pilgrims performing Hajj moving on the pages represents how spirituality and community transcends violence. This campaign is rooted in a local coffee shop’s efforts to spread information on the Snowy Plover and what efforts can be done to protect it.The production of the campaign includes a coffee sleeve, exclusive coffee menu, posters, a complimentary tote, and an informational brochure which folds out into a poster. Approach + Process: &nbsp; The brand identity is driven by the shape and texture of the Snowy Plover Egg, the main icon being the bird inside of the egg. The spots are the pattern on the bird egg. Indesign + Photoshop June 2023 SmartStart School is a Developmental Sensory Relationship-based Education Preschool located in Santa Monica aimed to support special needs children. The Five Senses Character Symbols: At SmartStart, there is an emphasis on Literacy, Language, and Sensory-Motor development. Because of this, I felt that it would be helpful for the students to have companions with them along the way in their journey since hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch help us understand the world around us. These illustrated characters represent the Five Senses and they are a critical part of the brand identity. Solution: Designing a mural for the Preschool to mark the school with a warm presence and welcoming first impression.&nbsp;This mural reflects a roadmap of the Five Senses coming together with a community of helping hands, which represent the children. The side and top of the mural additionally serve as signage to locate the school. What does a space that fosters a positive environment for special needs children to learn confidently &amp; feel appreciated look like? 2. How do colors impact children’s sensory systems? 3. However, I did appreciate how the typography held character.These were a few drafts of experimentation but none of these versions felt right and read as a logo. I wanted the logo to still encapsulate the playful energy of the original logo.However, there was one sketch that I felt had potential... Drawing upon the word “start!” this was trying to represent a destination pin, but with a heart to show passion. This one was a suprising since it was an experimental sketch, but it seemed the most interesting. A challenge I came across while designing this logo was that it was lacking an immediate recogition in representing Education. Designing the logo was the most challenging part of the project for me but once I had a clear idea of the direction I wanted to take with the logo, the identity was easy to form. I’m really proud of the Five Senses Characters because I never really considered myself an illustrator, but this really allowed me to tap into my doodling obsession and take it up a notch. The characters also drive the concept that in a world that doesn’t welcome those with disabilities, they will always have a friend to protect them. Overall, this is the work that I really love to do. Places that help others deserve really beautiful identities and I can only hope that I have a chance to do projects like this for the rest of my life.
